Measuring Up in Week 2...

This week saw students getting used to new routines and responsibilities. Weekly Jobs were allocated and the students are learning to take initiative to help and take responsibility for their classroom, themselves and their peers.  In Maths, students immersed themselves in measuring the lengths of many objects in the classroom using stiff wooden rulers and flexible tape measures. They practiced how to accurately measure and record in centimetres. We started work on narrative descriptive writing using a cute little pug dog image as a writing stimulus. Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on the structure and language features of narrative texts and how to 'paint images in the readers minds using varied and captivating words'. Students were asked to think about what types of 'Sizzling Starts' authors used in the books they enjoy to read.

During our PDH sessions we attempted writing some SMART goals for ourselves and decided which three Learning @ St Luke's dispositions we were using often. In History, we are learning about Aboriginal culture and students are curious about how long indigenous Australians have lived here and about their way of life. In Art, Students proudly completed a dot painting of their name using contrasting hot and cold colours and it provides a wonderfully colourful display outside our classroom.

Students were also excited to start the Young Technologist Program. The first session was primarily an introduction. We looked at various electronic components that they will be using to build their controller: resistors, switches, jumper wires, batteries, capacitors, LEDs to name a few. Pete and Kai from NexGen explained electricity, current, voltage and resistance in simple terms. In their reflection writing all students said they were really looking forward to start building the controller and to learn how to code!
