Week 1 and we're in full swing!
We have had a wonderful start to Term 3. It is lovely to see the students brimming with enthusiasm and feeling refreshed ready for learning every day this week.
This week in Science, students studied images of different natural/built environments using a Think, See, Wonder routine. They wrote their ideas and questions on post-it notes. They also enjoyed looking at our 'built' school environment. We visited a number spaces in the school and investigated the use and purpose of the school office, hall, library, playground, staff room and classrooms. Students asked questions such as 'who uses this space?', 'how is it used?' and 'why is it used?' and through discussion learnt that spaces are designed to meet particular needs of the people who use them. We also discussed what information services facilities exist in each space and why they are needed. It was our fortune that Mr Bedingfield was at our campus on the day we visited the school office and he spontaneously participated in our investigation to the excitement of all students. It is obvious that the students have a close connection with our school as they were all able to contribute many thoughtful ideas and questions.
On Friday, Mrs Bennett joined in our health lesson. Students were presented with a provocative question: How is friendship like a box of coloured pencils? After giving students time to think more deeply, they were able to make very relevant connections. For example, pencils in a box are like a group of friends; pencils, and hence friendships, can be broken, lost, but also found (reconnected); pencils (friends) need to be looked after; to name just a few of their great ideas. We are viewing a book related to this topic and over the next 4 weeks we will be exploring different perspectives and emotions associated with friendships.
This term I have introduced Class Dojos, to motivate students develop consistent and positive independent learning habits. Students earn Dojos for demonstrating e.g. absorption and perseverance in learning, neat and completed class and home learning tasks; thoughtful contributions and participation in discussion; showing empathy and grace; active listening and turn taking; lining up; collaboration and teamwork. They have responded very positively and enthusiastically to this new system.
Here are a few photos I took during our learning activities this week which I hope you will enjoy to view.
