Students need to complete entry of books on their Student Reading Record (SRR) by the end of August to be eligible for the award of a certification of their efforts.

Measurement, Marinas and Laser Beams - T3 Wk4 Update!
In a blink of an eye, it is hard to believe it is the end of Week 4! We are so incredibly fortunate to give students such diverse learning opportunities this term. Below are photos of all the wonderful learning that has been taking place inside and outside the classroom over the past few weeks.
For Literacy activities we have started a weekly learning contract in which students are required to complete certain tasks which may include: spelling activities, writing, reading/comprehension (Mieko), grammar and handwriting. Students are rewarded with Dojo points for each activity neatly completed and with good effort.
In Maths, we have focused on measurement concepts including time, volume and capacity and area as well as continuing work on number and the four operations.
We are continuing our novel study Mieko and the Fifth Treasure. Students are learning to distill the key ideas and themes of each chapter by answering questions, writing a summary and demonstrating their understanding by drawing a picture of a key event in the chapter. They are then creating a picCollage of their drawings and surrounding these with key theme words. The aim is to upload these to SeeSaw once they are complete (3 chapters at a time).
Our excursion to The Quays Marina on Monday was very meaningful. After having explored, discussed, researched and built Lego models of marinas, it was beneficial to see and hear about a real operational marina in our local area. The managers Dee and Steve volunteered their time and they were extremely informative and interested in showing the students all the features of their marina. Students were able to relate and compare their ideas and concepts and are now excited to collaboratively build a new and improved marina in Minecraft.
On Tuesday this week we were entertained and educated by the visiting Surfing Scientist. There was much excitement as students learned the workings, benefits and dangers of lasers and liquid nitrogen with inflating, shrinking and exploding balloons!
During library, students are looking at the features of information texts, in particular learning about Antactica. This week we have also brainstormed how to structure a speech and students have started researching some facts to support their key points. And, by all accounts the IPHSA Performing Arts Festival on Wednesday evening was a huge success with students delivering an amazing performance and being wonderful representatives of our School.

Public Speaking Competition Preparations
Dear Parents
Last week you will have received an information booklet outlining our Public Speaking event for Term 3. I trust that you have had a chance to read through it.
I have explained and outlined the event for the students and added an activity to this week's Home Learning Grid to help them get started. The Home Learning grid provides an overview of speech preparation process for the next few weeks.
Step 1: Week 4 - This week I would like students to discuss with parents their ideas for potential speech topics. The topic should be something they are passionate about (important to them) on which they can provide an opinion and encourage and explain how it can benefit others. The length of the speech is between 1.5 - 2 minutes which means some researched facts to support their opinion are necessary.
Step 2: Week 4 & 5 - Bring topic idea and notes to school on Thursday 16 August to commence speech writing plan. Students will be provided with two (2) speech writing sessions (Week 4 and 5).
Step 3: Week 5 & 6 - Students will bring home their speech for edits, transfer onto palm cards and practice at the end of Week 5. Practice at home Week 6.
Step 4: Week 7 - Students will deliver their speech in class in Week 7. Please refer to the marking rubric in the information booklet. Two students from the class will be chosen for the finals in Week 8.
Step 5: Week 8 - The two chosen students will present the same speech in an 'Assembly' round.
