We have commenced our Stage 2 Maths 'Drinks Stall' inquiry project in earnest. Students have been divided into mixed Year 3 and 4 groups and they are working collaboratively to plan, budget and design either a Lemonade, Raspberry Fizz or Banana Smoothie 'drinks stall'.
Students worked out all the different types of mathematical knowledge and skills they needed to apply during this process. Each group created a name and designed a poster for their stall. That required them to use their length and perimeter skills using a ruler to ensure the lettering on the sign was large enough and evenly spread out.
This week half of the students created samples of each product to determine not only the taste but what quantity each recipe produced. Meanwhile, the other half measured the capacity of various cup sizes and how many of each cup made up 1 litre. Students reasoned which cup size may be the best and how many cups we should produce based on the current student population. It is wonderful to see so many Learning@St Luke's dispositions in action at the same time. Students collaborated, listened and showed empathy as they measured and discussed their ideas. They used their imagination to solve problems, questioned and provided reasoned arguments with their recommendations and revised their number and capacity measurement skills.
Next week we are budgeting and students will be tasked with online shopping to create a cost plan for their stall. Whilst we have a team of 6 teaching staff guiding the students, they need to do all the thinking, measuring, calculating, testing and producing to make recommendations and ensure informed decisions are made throughout the process.
